hypothalamic
- vasopressin production is reduced to < 10%
- rare genetic disorder
- pituitary destruction: craniopharyngioma, surgery, trauma,
meningitis, histiocytosis X
psychogenic (water intoxication)
- compulsive intake of large amounts of fluid
- inhibition of normal vasopressin production
primary nephrogenic
- rare sex-linked recessive disorder (infants and young males)
- tubules and collecting system unresponsive to vasopressin
secondary nephrogenic
- drug toxicity, analgesic nephropathy, sickle cell, hypokalemia,
hypercalcemia, chronic uremic nephropathy, postobstructive
nephropathy, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis
