etiology
  • IV drug abuse
  • bacterial endocarditis (12%)
  • immunocompromise (malignancy, EtOH, steroids, chemo, DM, etc.)
  • S/P aortic valve surgery, CABG

organism
  • S. aureus (53%)
  • Salmonella (33-50%)
  • streptococcus
site findings
  • saccular structure arising eccentrically from aortic wall
  • periaortic gas formation
  • adjacent vertebral osteomyelitis
  • adjacent reactive lymph node enlargement

  • life threatening hemmorhage (75%)
  • 67% overall mortality
