cystic adnexal masses

  • ovarian cyst
    • mature follicle measures up to 2.5 cm at ovulation
    • corpus luteum cyst common in first 16 weeks of pregnancy
    • polycystic (Stein-Leventhal) disease
  • paraovarian cyst
    • Wolffian duct remnants in broad ligament
  • ovarian neoplasm
    • serous cystadenoma (most common benign ovarian tumor)
    • mucinous cystadenoma (usually complex)
    • cystic teratoma (usually complex)
  • endometriosis
    • diffuse (not detectable by US)
    • localized (generally anechoic or hypoechoic)
  • ectopic pregnancy
  • pelvic inflammatory disease
    • gonorrhea or chlamydia
    • localized abscess and hydrosalpinx
  • non-gynecologic mass
