Reye syndrome


hepatitis + encephalitis following viral upper respiratory tract infection with H/O large dose of aspirin

  • age: children and young adults
  • obtundation rapidly followed by coma
  • 15 - 85% mortality (from white matter edema and demyelination)

CT findings:
  • initially (within 2-3 days) small ventricles
  • later progressive enlargement of lateral ventricles and sulci
  • markedly diminished attenuation of white matter

diagnosis by liver biopsy: fatty infiltration
